Christian Bassogog's late penalty helped Shanghai Shenhua avoid a defeat by second to bottom Guangzhou City in their 1-1 draw in the Chinese Super League

(CSL) on Tuesday.

The draw extended Shanghai's unbeaten run to nine games, and lifted them up to third place in the league table, while Guangzhou City remained in the relegation zone with 12 points from 21 games.

After a goalless first half, Guangzhou forward Ye Chugui's long pass found Gui Hong on the right flank of the box, who followed up with a tap-in to break the deadlock.

In the 87th minute, Bassogog's volley was denied by Guangzhou goalkeeper Han Jiaqi. Liu Ruofan made a follow-up shot, but was ruled out for handball.

In the stoppage time, Shanghai striker Zhu Jianrong was knocked down by Guangzhou defenders in the box, and Shanghai was awarded a penalty after the referee checked the VAR. Bassogog seized the opportunity to level for Shanghai.

Elsewhere, Marcao scored a brace to help Wuhan Three Towns crush Dalian Pro 4-0, keeping their leading position in the table.

In the 28th minute, Marcao notched his first goal after heading home Davidson's cross. The Brazilian enlarged the gap for Wuhan just three minutes later with another header to make up for Nicolae Claudiu Stanciu's failed long range volley.

Shortly after the second half kicked off, Marcao returned the favor with a direct pass to Davidson, who turned around to slot home. Before the final whistle, Davidson demonstrated himself again by sending a cross to Ademilson, who netted from close range to seal the victory.
